MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Garrett Greene offered an honest evaluation of his game after spring practice on Wednesday.
Even though he’s aware of the praise from around the country, Greene is far from satisfied with where he is a quarterback. Greene referred to his 2023 season, one that saw him emerge as the leader of the Mountaineers, as just “an alright year.” He even added that he feels West Virginia, who finished with a 9-4 overall record, had the talent to win 11 games.
Keeping up with the same theme, head coach Neal Brown said Greene just played “okay” in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in December, going as far as to say it was below the standard he has set for Greene at this point. Brown also put pressure on his quarterback, saying he needs to take responsibility for his own development.
Greene may have accounted for 29 total touchdowns even while missing time with an injury last season, but he feels he still can take his game to another level. Echoing what Brown said just a few days earlier, Greene talked about needing to increase his completion percentage. Greene completed only 52.9% of his passes in 2023, a number below the bar for most elite quarterbacks.
Being more accurate also means playing smarter for Greene. When asked what playing smarter, something Brown has often brought up, means to him, Greene said he can’t try to do too much and must look to check downs more. Greene knows another season for Jahiem White and even the return of CJ Donaldson offer him talented weapons out of the backfield who can extend plays on their own if no one is open down field.
While the Greene will be able to rely many of his key skill players from 2023 being back again in 2024, he does have a new wide receiver in transfer Jaden Bray. Greene voiced already being able to tell Bray will be an asset. Greene also has a new coach, granted one he’s very familiar with. Tyler Allen was promoted to quarterbacks coach to replace Sean Reagan. Greene stressed his familiarity with Allen makes it an easy transition.
No matter what happens, one thing is for certain – the Mountaineers will go as far as Garrett Greene will take them.
