When a team sends a Heisman-winning quarterback and dynamic duo of first round wide receivers to the NFL the base level assumption is that there will be a massive drop off in the following season. LSU football will be replacing Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., and more, but it looks like their offense already looks special again this spring. Garrett Nussmeier and the entire LSU offense looked electric in the spring game, ready to carry the team once again in 2024.
New starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was absolutely feeling himself all day long, playing perfectly as a passer. He finished his day going 7/7 for 172 passing yards and two touchdowns. With three passes completed over 40 yards downfield you could not ask for a better performance.
While a few of Nussmeier's passes were of the easier variety he didn't have any problem making a few incredible highlight plays. His scramble and flick of the wrist on the move for a 45-yard touchdown to Zavion Thomas was perhaps the play of entire LSU spring game.
Thomas was definitely wide open, but Nussmeier still stepped up into the pocket and delivered impressively. Nussmeier also connected with Kyren Lacy (who LSU needs to lean on this year) for a huge gain too. Every throw looked easier than it should have for Nussmeier and LSU. And while that might be an indictment against the defense, it's also encouraging considering what the team had to replace.
It wasn't just the passing game that looked electric and right where it needed to be this spring either. The run game, though inconsistent at times, still showed incredible flashes thanks to star second year running back Kaleb Jackson. His 32-yard scamper and score was more than explosive, showcasing just how special Jackson may be for the LSU Tigers this fall.
Kaleb Jackson actually showed some promising talent last season as well, carrying the ball 31 times for nearly 200 yards and finding the end zone four times as a true freshman. If he can live up to the feature back talents that Brian Kelly and the LSU coaching staff thought he may have when they brought him in last year then the offense may be the most balanced it's been in years.
There's still certainly competition at wide receiver, and playmakers still need to step up there, but the room looks wildly deep for just having lost two first round picks. Nussmeier looks like the absolute truth returning for his fourth year of college football, ready to explode after patiently waiting his turn. The defense struggled, but that was somewhat expected. And even if that's the case again this fall, this LSU Tigers offense looks electric enough to carry the team once again.
