One of the most impressive freshmen on the Nebraska football team this spring is offensive tackle Grant Brix. The quarterbacks might be stealing all the hype, but as we all know, games are still won in the trenches.

Matt Rhule has talked about that from his first day as Nebraska football head coach and in his first year and change on the job, the Huskers have improved immensely in the trenches — on both sides of the ball.

That’s a two-fold thing. It’s about recruiting and development. The development has improved and the doubt that once existed about the coaching ability of Donovan Raiola have been washed away. The dude can coach and recruit.

Grant Bix is making an early impression

Grant Brix might be the best example of that. The top-100 offensive tackle was a huge recruiting win for the Huskers, who beat out teams like Iowa, Alabama, Oklahoma, and others for his commitment. Brix was one of the best O-linemen in the 2024 class. He’s a beast and his run-blocking is nasty, in a good way.

It made me believe he could be an elite guard. But that’s why I’m not the head coach. Rhule talked about Grix this week. He singled out Brix and Gibson Pyle for their performance so far during spring ball.

Yet, when talking about Brix, Rhule made it clear that his future with Nebraska football is at tackle.

“Grant has a bright, bright future to me at tackle,” Rhule said. “He can play tackle at this level. He’s put on a lot of good weight since he’s gotten here. He’s a straight-A student and he’s going to do everything right on the football field.”

That’s high praise and makes you wonder if there’s a chance we could see Brix on the field for more than four games in the 2024 season.
