Hawaii hires former QB Timmy Chang as head coach

Hawaii has a new head football coach, and it's a familiar face.

Former Rainbow Warriors quarterback Timmy Chang was announced as the program's next coach on Saturday night. Chang was a four-year starter at the school from 2000-04.

"I'm back. I'm home," Chang said in a press release. "In my heart, I've never left. Like I've always done, I'm ready to give my all for Hawai'i. The highest privilege in coaching is the right to represent an institution as a head coach. This is beyond indescribable. I get to do it here in Hawai'i, where I am from. I am so proud to represent MY school and state. I'm honored to lead the BRADDAHHOOD."

Chang currently holds the record for most career pass attempts by an FBS quarterback (2,436), and set the record for most career passing yards as well before being later passed by Case Keenum. He also ranks 11th in career passing touchdowns with 117.

Over his four seasons, Chang led Hawaii to three bowl games and a program-record 29 wins. He went undrafted in 2005, but played parts of two seasons in the NFL before a short international career.

After retiring as a player, Chang became a graduate assistant at SMU under his former coach, June Jones. He then jumped to Jackson State to be its offensive coordinator, leaving for the same role at Emory & Henry after two seasons.

In 2017, Chang was hired as inside receivers coach at Nevada. He spent the next few years with the Wolf Pack, becoming their tight ends coach in 2018 and wide receivers coach in 2021 before returning to Hawaii to lead the program.
