When Houston hired Dana Holgorsen, they did so with the thought in mind that he could help transition the program to a Power Five conference. At the time of his hire, they were in the American Athletic Conference and knew that the landscape was about to change dramatically and they needed to find a Power Five conference to call home.

Holgorsen had made that transition once with West Virginia going from the Big East to the Big 12, but due to on-field results and a poor recruiting class, Holgorsen is now out of a job.

On Sunday, the Houston Cougars hired Tulane's Willie Fritz to be its next head coach. Fritz has a 54-47 record in his eight years on the job, but has gone 23-4 over the last two seasons. Prior to Tulane, Fritz led Georgia Southern to a pair of nine-win seasons in 2014 and 2015.

Fritz's first head coaching job was at Central Missouri where he compiled a 97-47 record and then from 2010-13 he went 40-15 at Sam Houston State. He's won at every stop.
