If Texas QB Quinn Ewers plays, Oklahoma could be in trouble

In a post-practice media session Thursday , Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said QBs Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card “are probably about as healthy as they’ve been in about a month.”

In the opener against Louisiana-Monroe, Ewers helped guide the Longhorns to a 52-10 win. The next week, he connected on nine of 12 passes for 134 yards in the first quarter against No. 1 Alabama, but he left the game following this brutal hit and hasn't played since. Card has started every game since.

Ewers' return presents a major challenge for Oklahoma (3-2, 0-2). The Sooners are still reeling after losses to Kansas State and TCU, having given up 541 yards and four touchdowns through the air in those two games alone.

Against lightweights UTEP, Kent State and Nebraska the previous three games, OU allowed only one touchdown and made three interceptions.

A successful Texas passing game led by Ewers sets up nicely for Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson. With 515 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022, Robinson has topped the 100-yard mark in his past three games, including a 183-yard performance against UTSA.

Even worse for the Sooners, starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s status for Saturday is unknown. He remains in the concussion protocol after suffering a brutal hit of his own versus the Horned Frogs.

If Ewers starts, Oklahoma faces arguably its most difficult challenge of the season.
