Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz signs extension through 2029 season

Iowa Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz ideally won't be going anywhere through the remainder of the decade.

On Friday, Iowa announced the university and Ferentz have come to terms on a contract extension set to run through the 2029 college football season. Ferentz will earn $7 million per year via a $500,000 base salary, $5.5 million in additional compensation and a $1 million longevity bonus. The 66-year-old just completed his 23rd season in charge of the Hawkeyes and guided the program to a 10-4 record for the 2021 campaign.

His 178 victories make him Iowa's all-time winningest coach.

"Kirk’s consistent leadership and success over 23 years has been amazing and appreciated as he has led our football program in a first-class manner," athletic director Gary Barta said for the prepared statement. "His success over the past 23 years speaks for itself. He is an asset to the University of Iowa and our athletics department as a whole. The foundation of his program is strong, and the future looks bright."

According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, Ferentz was previously signed through 2025 on a deal worth $5.1 million for next season. He and his staff are eligible for performance-based bonuses per the terms of his new agreement.

"Over his three decades with Iowa, coach Ferentz has led our football program with tremendous success and integrity, showcasing how athletics can be an enriching experience for our student-athletes and a corridor for many to learn about our remarkable university," University of Iowa president Barb Wilson added. "This contract reflects our commitment to Kirk and Mary as members of our Hawkeye family."
