Zion Webb Named Jacksonville State Starting QB

After a long battle over the course of the offseason, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks have finally named a starting quarterback. Head Coach Rich Rodriguez tabs 5th year senior Zion Webb as the Gamecocks starter. Fan favorite Webb beat out NC State transfer Aaron McLaughlin for the starting spot.

Although a newly named starter, Webb is no stranger to the Gamecock faithful. This will be Webb’s 4th season seeing time as a starter for Jacksonville State. In 2020, Webb was named 1st team All-OVC for his stellar play. Furthermore, he also led the Gamecocks to a Quarterfinal appearance in the FCS Playoffs that year. Additionally, barring that injury, many believe the Gamecocks would have won that game and advance to the Semifinals.

Over the course of his decorated career, Webb has gained over 3,300 yards and scored 31 touchdowns for the Gamecocks. Maybe more impressively, Webb only has eight turnovers in 29 career games. Webb missed the 2021 fall season due to a leg injury suffered in the aforementioned 2021 spring season. He’s now recovered and looking as explosive as ever. Webb will project to be a centerpiece to the new up tempo spread for 1st year Head Coach Rich Rodriguez.

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks kick off the college football slate for the nation when they take on the 10th ranked Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on August 27th at 2:30 CST. The game is featured in the FCS Kickoff Series, will be hosted at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, and aired on ESPN.
