Regarding sports, college football included, people tend to think about players solely based on what they do between the lines. In reality, there is much more to sports and its participants as people. Tennessee tight end Jacob Warren was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list on Thursday in recognition of what he does off the field.

This award and trophy are given out annually to the person who best exemplifies community service in college football. The watch list comprises 108 players, which at first glance may seem like a lot, but when you consider how many players there are in college football and how many of them are doing great things to improve the world, it is really significant to be singled out.

Warren is on the Vols Leadership Council, but his leadership goes deeper than that. He leads by example. According to utsports.com, Warren has been named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll a record five times, and now in his sixth year of college, he is working on his master’s degree in agricultural leadership. He can be seen on his Instagram helping out the next generation of football players. Community is obviously special to Warren, as a player who grew up in Knoxville. He has four touchdowns in his Tennessee career and finished with 163 yards last season. 2023 tight end signee Ethan Davis has also credited Warren for taking a mentorship role with him recently.
