Jaguars coach Urban Meyer: 'No chance' I take USC job

Sure, Urban Meyer's first year as an NFL coach isn't off to a very good start, but that doesn't mean he's ready to throw in the towel just yet.

Seemingly as soon as USC fired head coach Clay Helton, rumors began swirling that Meyer could potentially fill the role. However, Meyer shot that possibility down pretty quickly.

"There's no chance," Meyer said in a press conference on Wednesday. "I'm here and committed to trying to build an organization."

It's really no surprise Meyer's name popped into the conversation the second Helton was let go. His collegiate coaching career boasts a 187-32 record and three national championships. That's not to mention the long list of players he coached prior to them having successful NFL careers.

Those rumors connecting Meyer to the Trojans were probably also sparked quickly because his young tenure at the pro level has been rough — even before the regular season started last week. First, his pick for an assistant coach quickly resigned amid controversy. Then, he was fined during the offseason for breaking COVID safety protocols. Then, even with a bright young star in Trevor Lawrence primed to take over the franchise, the Jaguars lost their Week 1 bout with the Houston Texans amid illegal formation penalties and dropped passes.

As far as the vacancy at USC goes, there are plenty of potential candidates in the running to take over, and if Meyer's fortunes in Jacksonville don't turn around soon, it won't be surprising to see his name pop up in more college coach vacancy news in the near future.
