In a surprising move, LSU cornerback Sevyn Banks quietly declared for the 2023 NFL Draft, The Advocate reported on Monday.

Banks had one more year of eligibility remaining, and after missing most of the season after suffering a scary neck injury, it was assumed the Ohio State transfer would return.

Taking his talents to Baton Rouge after a stint with the Buckeyes, Banks couldn’t stay healthy for the Tigers. Battling a hip injury during the offseason, a knee injury during fall camp and then going down with a neck injury against Auburn, it was a challenging 2022 season for Banks.

As a fifth-year senior, Banks was not required to submit his name into the 2023 NFL Draft pool by the Jan. 16 deadline. Despite this, he never made a formal announcement.

According to The Advocate, Banks is set to participate in LSU’s Pro Day.

With the departure of Banks, LSU returns just one scholarship cornerback from the 2022 roster in sophomore Laterrance Welch.

Shakeup in LSU’s Cornerback Room

Banks now joins Mekhi Garner, Jay Ward and Jarrick Bernard-Converse as players declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft in the LSU secondary. Of the eight corners this program had in 2022, they return just one in Welch.

Head Coach Brian Kelly and his staff hit the NCAA Transfer Portal with force this offseason, adding four fresh cornerbacks who can step in and compete for immediate playing time.

The Additions: Texas A&M’s Denver Harris, Syracuse’s Duce Chestnut, Ohio State’s JK Johnson and Southeastern Louisiana’s Zy Alexander.
