LSU reportedly expects to hire Notre Dame's Brian Kelly as head coach

After 12 seasons at Notre Dame, Brian Kelly is reportedly set to become the head coach of the LSU Tigers with an announcement coming as soon as Tuesday, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

Kelly, 60, has led the Fighting Irish to a 92-39 record during his tenure. He coached Notre Dame to an appearance in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, although the team's victories in 2012 and 2013 were vacated due to academic violations. More recently, Notre Dame appeared in the Rose Bowl in January but lost to Alabama, and currently sits at No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

A week ago, Kelly was asked about rumors that he'd leave Notre Dame.

“No. I mean, look, I think Mike Tomlin had the best line, right? Unless that fairy godmother comes by with that $250 million check, my wife would want to take a look at it first," Kelly said, via Matt Fortuna of The Athletic. "I'd have to run it by her.”

The LSU Tigers were national champions just two seasons ago after Ed Orgeron led the team to a perfect 15-0 record in the 2019 season. The program fell from grace quickly though, with a 5-5 record in 2020 and a 6-6 record in 2021. Orgeron reached a separation agreement with the school in October after LSU began the year 4-3.

Reports of Kelly's impending departure from Notre Dame comes a day after the USC Trojans hired Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley on Sunday. Along with the coaching changes at those four historically significant college football universities, the Florida Gators also made a change by firing Dan Mullen and replacing him with Billy Napier.
