Maryland keeping mum on starting QB choice for season opener

Maryland Terrapins coach Mike Locksley knows who he is starting at quarterback between Alabama transfer Taulia Tagovailoa and redshirt freshman Lance LeGendre for Saturday's season-opening game against the Northwestern Wildcats.

The rest of us will have to wait.

"I'm just not ready to announce to the public who it is," Locksley told reporters on Tuesday, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "We do know who our quarterback will be. We've had the conversations with the players that are involved, but from a competitive advantage standpoint, it really doesn't (do us) any good to announce our starting quarterback today."

Tagovailoa, younger brother of Miami Dolphins and former Alabama Crimson Tide QB Tua Tagovailoa, had his transfer from Alabama to Maryland approved in August. He completed nine of 12 pass attempts for 100 yards and a touchdown with the Crimson Tide last year.

LeGendre was mostly a spectator in 2019, as he completed one of three passes for seven yards.

"As I told the guys when we met, the starter doesn't have to look over his shoulder," Locksley said, per the AP. "We're not looking to create this controversy that I know so many people love to have. But they are also well aware that this is a production-based business, and they need to compete and do their job."

Maryland hasn't produced a winning season since 2014, so it's possible both QBs could see significant playing time between Oct. 24 and Dec. 12.
