In Week 3 against Bowling Green, a major Michigan football injury occurred during the later stages of the game. Star interior defensive lineman Mason Graham, a sophomore superstar for the Wolverines, broke his thumb. Against Minnesota last weekend, Graham finally returned from injury and has a hilarious new nickname given to him by transfer edge rusher Josaiah Stewart.

Michigan football injury leads to hilarious new nickname

During Michigan’s 52-10 victory over Minnesota last weekend, Michigan football star defensive lineman Mason Graham finally made his return debut after missing the Wolverines’ first two Big Ten games of the 2023 season (Rutgers and Nebraska). Graham wore a massive club (a lot of tape over his cast) against the Golden Gophers, leading transfer Josaiah Stewart — an edge from Coastal Carolina — to give him a new nickname: ‘Thanos.’

“We call him (Mason Graham) Maso, Mace — I started calling him Thanos because he got that big club on,” Stewart said with a smile on Wednesday evening. “He just laughed it off. Hopefully it sticks — hopefully he likes it.”

Mason Graham gives his thoughts

Mason Graham also spoke with the media on Tuesday evening — he was asked about his thoughts on his newfound nickname from Josaiah Stewart.

“I don’t know if everyone called me that, I think it was just him,” Graham said. “He got a little kick out of it, so it was pretty funny.”

Mason Graham had an incredible game for Michigan football against Minnesota over the weekend despite his “Thanos” club, prompting a lot of high praise from Jim Harbaugh and others heading into Week 7 against Indiana this weekend. According to Graham, his performance with the club surprised him a bit, though he added that it felt “like a lot of plays were coming to me, so I just had to make them at that point.”
