Last Saturday, during Michigan’s 30-24 win over No. 2 Ohio State at the Big House, Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards was a key factor with a major trick play. Edwards, who has now thrown a few passes in the Maize and Blue, including a crucial trick play against the Buckeyes (2023) and a touchdown pass in the Big Ten title game (2021), apparently has been working with the Wolverines’ quarterback room weekly. According to Kirk Campbell, who addressed the media this afternoon, Edwards — and others — get some throws in every Friday.

Donovan Edwards has talked quite a bit about the many skills that he hopes to showcase during his time with Michigan football. We’ve seen him run, we’ve seen him catch, and for the third time in his U-M career last weekend, we got to see him throw a pass. Of course, the trick play worked, moving the sticks and lengthening a sturdy offensive drive for the Wolverines.

On Wednesday, ahead of the Big Ten title game this weekend, Michigan football quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell (first-year) explained that Edwards is flaunting his arm talent on a weekly basis inside of Schembechler Hall.
“Donovan (Edwards) loves — we (practice) every Friday, and he comes over and gets some throws,” Kirk Campbell said. “Donovan is just a natural athlete; revert back to the 2021 Big Ten championship, and he made that throw there. For those skill sets, we’re evaluating the entire team, not just Donovan. Anybody that can help us in any way, gain an extra yard, or complement us in a different situation, we’re looking at that and evaluating it.
“In practice, we have a little bit of relaxing time, (Edwards will) throw the football around, but he’s not the only one.”
Edwards throwing more passes this season?
This weekend, No. 2 Michigan football (12-0, 9-0 Big Ten) and No. 16 Iowa (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) will face off for the Big Ten Championship. If you recall, the first time that Donovan Edwards got to flash his arm talent was back in the 2021 conference title matchup against the Hawkeyes, when he launched a 75-yard touchdown pass (below).
It’s unclear whether or not we will get to see the junior Michigan football running back throw another pass this fall, though it’s clear that the talent is there, and the staff knows that they can use it when needed.
