Michigan State football will be hosting one of the best cornerback transfers in the portal in San Jose State’s Jay’Vion Cole.
The good news keeps coming for Michigan State football. After what seemed to be a wildly successful visit with transfer cornerback Edward Woods on Monday, the Spartans received news later that night that another transfer cornerback would be visiting East Lansing.
This time, its Woods’ high school teammate, Jay’Vion Cole.
Cole started his college career at Cal Poly. He then transferred to San Jose State and has quickly become one of the most notable corners in the nation. He just completed his sophomore season at San Jose State and is garnering a lot of interest in the portal. He plans to take an official visit to Michigan State on the weekend of May 11-13. He also set a visit with Texas for May 2.
Last season, Cole recorded 10 pass breakups. This was 14th in the nation among cornerbacks. He also totaled three interceptions, three tackles for loss, a sack, and 38 total tackles. He also recorded an interception in his freshman year at Cal-Poly.
In San Jose State’s biggest game last season, Cole had a sack and four tackles. That happened to be against Oregon State and current Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith who is no stranger to Cole and would certainly love to bring him in to help bolster his secondary. As previously mentioned, Cole attended high school in Oakland, Calif., with Woods, a transfer corner that MSU is heavily pursuing from Arizona State. Woods is expected to make his commitment announcement on Tuesday and is deciding between Alabama and Michigan State. Should he choose MSU, we have to hope that could go a long way in landing Cole, too.
These would be two significant wins for the coaching staff should they beat out Alabama and Texas for two top portal targets.
Cole stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 175 pounds. He would certainly add some major playmaking ability in the secondary for MSU. Revamping the secondary is something that seems to be the focus of the coaching staff after spring ball. Getting potentially two impact players would help turnover the roster from the Mel Tucker era. Demetrice Martin has gotten a full spring camp to evaluate his players and seems ready to make changes.
