Missouri Tigers name Josh Heupel offensive coordinator

The University of Missouri football team has named Josh Heupel as its new offensive coordinator.

Heupel, who spent this past season as offensive coordinator of Utah State, is best remembered as the All-American quarterback who led the Oklahoma Sooners to a national championship in 2000. Heupel also finished second place in the Heisman voting that season.

Heupel was also Oklahoma's quarterbacks coach from 2006-10. Under his tutelage, quarterback Sam Bradford won a Heisman Trophy and was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Bradford's successor, Landry Jones, is currently the backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Heupel takes over a Missouri offense that averaged 280.9 yards per game, which was last in the SEC, and was 127th in scoring offense with 13.6 points per game. The team finished the 2015 season with a record of 5-7, and coach Gary Pinkel resigned after a tumultuous season in which Tigers players joined students in protest until the university president resigned. Pinkel also revealed he has cancer.

Heupel will join Barry Odom's staff, a longtime assistant at Missouri who was named coach after Pinkel's resignation.
