MSU's Khary Crump gets probation for tunnel helmet assault, comments on playing future

Michigan State cornerback Khary Crump said he's hoping to move forward from the Oc. 29 incident that saw him strike a Michigan player with his helmet in a tunnel altercation after MSU's 29-7 loss to the Wolverines.

Crump was one of several MSU players who got into the tunnel scuffle with Gemon Green and Ja'Den McBurrows of Michigan. Crump was caught on video hitting Green with his helmet and was originally charged with felonious assault. The Associated Press and ESPN's Tom VanHaaren is now reporting that while Crump has been sentenced, he's not being punished for the crime originally charged against him.

The MSU sophomore entered a plea agreement that reduced the charge to a misdemeanor, which he plead guilty to. He was sentenced under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act (HYTA), which is a Michigan law that will allow him to keep the charge off his record upon completion of his probation.

"If Mr. Crump successfully completes probation, his record will be clear," the chief assistant prosecuting attorney told ESPN. "Second, under the statute, the case and its associated records are now sealed from public view. Consistent with the act and its confidentiality requirements, we will have no further substantive comment."

While the state will no longer comment on the matter, Crump expressed his regret for the incident.

"Unfortunately, an exchange of words (took place), I felt attacked and unfortunately I did what I did. I'm not proud of that. I'm looking forward to moving forward," he said.

True to the rivalry, the cornerback also got one final shot at Michigan

"I had difficulties trying to stomach my actions ... on that fateful day, but it happened. I can't take it back,'' Crump said told MLive. "Honestly, I'm just looking forward to wuppin' some maize and blue in the future — on the football field, of course.''
