Nebraska football safety Corey Collier Jr. officially entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. This was reported by multiple media outlets.

Collier played in five games for the Nebraska football program last season. He did not record a tackle in those games, seeing action mostly on special teams.

He was one of the first recruits for Matt Rhule and the Nebraska football coaching staff last year. Collier committed to Nebraska on December 17, as the first wave of commitments came from the new coaching staff.

However, safety was a position of strength for Nebraska last season, and it became apparent that there was not enough room for him at the safety position. It’s also important to note that Collier has not been on the team since February.

Collier was a highly-rated recruit coming out of high school. He was the 18th overall safety in the 2021 class, and the 39th overall player in his class from the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

When you look at where Nebraska sits with the safety position right now, this is a transfer that makes sense. The program has a lot of talent at the position, especially when you look at available options this year. Isaac Gifford headlines the position, after electing to come back this season.

There is also a ton of young talent at the position as well. Caleb Benning will be coming in the fall, and Khamir Prescott will also be  a part of the mix as well. This team is well-prepared at the safety position for the future. Collier as a sophomore still has several years to play. It may have been in his best interest to enter the transfer portal now.

It will be interesting to see who else enters the portal, with depth becoming readily apparent at several positions. Hopefully Collier can at least find some way to play, in what is sure to be a busy and active transfer portal. The portal itself is a nice option, but there are certainly no guarantees.
