Former Nebraska football coaching legend Tom Osborne addressed the tenure of Scott Frost.
Scott Frost has always had a complicated history with Nebraska football. At first, he spurned the Huskers and Tom Osborne to sign with Bill Walsh and Stanford.
That drew the ire of the fanbase before Frost transferred home and eventually led Nebraska football to a share of the national championship in 1997.
However, he was also the guy that replaced Tommie Frazier. Frost lost one of his first starts to Arizona State and despite a solid finish to the 1996 season, a loss to Texas in the Big 12 title game cost Nebraska a national title shot.
The end of his playing career made Scott Frost a Nebraska football legend forever. Yet, his time as head coach was one of the darkest eras in program history and Tom Osborne joined a podcast this week with Adam Carriker and discussed the Frost era among many other topics.
Here’s what Osborne said about Frost:
“I think he went through a very difficult time. He came in on the tail end of a not very successful recruiting regime from the coach previously. It’s not like he was dealt a really good deck. Then you had COVID and the thing that was a little puzzling was that if you looked at the score at the end of three quarters, Scott would have had a really good record.”
Osborne continued:
“For whatever reason, they couldn’t hang in the fourth quarter and lost a lot of games. As you know, this is a business of what have you done for me lately. It’s really hard to stay employed if you have four losing seasons. I think Scott did a lot of good things. I know social media is brutal but a lot of the stuff you hear is over the top. I wish Scott the best.”
Grant Bix talks Nebraska football ahead of decision
One of Nebraska’s top recruiting targets left in the 2024 class, Grant Brix, talked about his top four contenders with 247 Sports, which are the Huskers, Alabama, Kansas State, and Oklahoma.
It sounds like Brix wants to stay in the Midwest, which should give Nebraska football an advantage. If this one comes down to Nebraska and Kansas State — the Huskers should win out.
Here’s what Brix said to 247 Sports about Nebraska football ahead of his decision date which is expected to be Aug. 25:
“Nebraska is just going to shoot up and up. It’s crazy to me how the team is going to look totally different next year. Coach Matt Rhule went in and has changed the whole culture. He’s instilling really good things there. He’s told me there’s a big difference from spring ball to the fall camp. I can believe it because of that coaching staff. I can feel the difference.”
Nebraska announces first single-digit numbers
On Wednesday night, the Huskers handed out the first single-digit jersey numbers for this season. It’s a new tradition that Matt Rhule has done at Temple and Baylor.
Jeff Sims got No. 7. Billy Kemp is No. 1, while Luke Reimer is No. 4 and Isaac Gifford is No. 2. More announcements are expected this week with five more numbers to give out, maybe 10 if Nebraska fooball gives out the number zero.
