New San Diego State HC Sean Lewis opens up about time with Deion Sanders at Colorado

The 2023 season didn't go the way Sean Lewis expected.

He started the season as the offensive coordinator at one of the most hyped programs in the country, coaching alongside "Coach Prime" with the Colorado Buffaloes.

Head coach Deion Sanders demoted Lewis to co-offensive coordinator late in the season. By the end of it all, the Buffs 4-8 and Lewis seemed to be on the outs.

He ultimately became the head coach at San Diego State, which goes down as a nice promotion, but no matter how things ended with Sanders at Buffalo, Lewis recently told Jim Rome that he has no regrets about his time in Boulder.

“If I did not make that leap of faith and make that move, we wouldn’t be talking today," Lewis told Rome (h/t On3)."I have been a Midwest guy primarily for the majority of my career a little bit of time off in the northeast, but Coach [Prime] gave me a tremendous opportunity and I’m grateful for it to come west and to establish some ties out this way.

“Because of the great work that we were able to do and open this door and this opportunity, so no regrets. I’m grateful and thankful for the experiences shared and the lessons learned and easy to apply them and to build something special here.”

Colorado's 3-0 start and the hype surrounding Coach Prime definitely put Lewis on the national radar. At the time, he was leading up one of the most explosive-looking offenses in the country. The Buffaloes, of course, couldn't sustain the momentum, but Lewis parlayed his time with Sanders to a better opportunity at SDSU.

It won't be Lewis' first time as a head coach. He ran the program at Kent State from 2018 through 2022, leaving the Golden Flashes with a 24-31 record with a MAC East title in 2021.
