On Tuesday, new reports surfaced that the NFL is coming after a vital Michigan football assistant coach. According to many outlets, Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles for their DC opening following the Eagles narrow loss to Kansas City in Super Bowl 57. This would be a massive hit to Harbaugh’s coaching staff ahead of the 2023 Wolverine football season, which could bring home a Michigan National Title for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Michigan defensive coordinator to interview with NFL
Most Michigan football fans are used to this by now, after all, Jim Harbaugh develops NFL talent on the field and on his sideline. Still, after losing one-year defensive play-caller Mike McDonald to the Baltimore Ravens a season ago, it would be hard to let another elite defensive coordinator head to the NFL after just one season. According to new reports, the Eagles have already interviewed with many candidates, one of which is Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
Throughout his first season with Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines, Minter led the Wolverine defense to some massive accomplishments — for a time, the Michigan defense ranked No. 1 in every major category. After it was all said and done, Minter led the Wolverines ‘no star’ defense to a 13-1 season, and was ranked in the top-7 in both total defense and scoring defense. Minter was an essential piece of Harbaugh’s 2022 coaching staff, which saw a second-straight Big Ten title and CFP appearance.
Wolverines must do anything possible to keep Minter
If there is anything that Michigan football can do to keep Jesse Minter on its sideline this year, the Wolverines must do it. Minter is a young, talented defensive play-caller, and as we saw a season ago, is a core part of Michigan’s on-field success.
I doubt there is much that can keep Minter in town if that NFL wants him as a defensive coordinator, though if there is, it’s time to open the checkbook.
