North Carolina football workouts to continue despite coronavirus outbreak, switch to remote learning

As of Monday evening, the North Carolina Tar Heels football program intends to continue workouts despite a massive coronavirus outbreak that led to the school shifting to full-time remote learning.

Per ESPN's Andrea Adelson, 177 North Carolina students are currently self-isolating, while another 349 are quarantined.

In an official statement, UNC said:

"Our student-athletes will continue to attend online classes, and may choose to remain in their current on- and off-campus residences. Workouts and practices will continue under the standards set by our University, health officials and department.

"We still are expecting to play this fall, and we will continue to evaluate the situation in coordination with the University, the ACC, state and local officials, and health officials. The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, and community remains our priority."

In early July, North Carolina temporarily paused football workouts after at least 37 student-athletes, coaches and staff members tested positive for the coronavirus. The football program reported zero positive results in its latest round of testing.

Also on Monday, Tulsa suspended football workouts due to a coronavirus outbreak within the team.

North Carolina is scheduled to open its season against Syracuse on Sept. 12.
