Notre Dame football players to quarantine, live at hotel

Last month, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick made headlines when he said the 2020 college football season could begin without all conferences participating because of the coronavirus pandemic.

On Thursday, ESPN's Heather Dinich reported on precautions the university is taking to keep players safe over the summer.

Per Dinich, roughly 90 football players will check into single-occupancy rooms at the on-campus The Morris Inn beginning next Monday. Once all of the players are under the same roof, they will eat their meals at the hotel, and they will quarantine up to seven days. All players will be tested over that time.

Anyone who tests positive will be sent home to self-isolate.

Voluntary team workouts could begin around June 22, with players training in groups of 10 during the opening phase of the process. Non-players will be required to wear masks inside indoor facilities. Players will be encouraged to wear them for indoor workouts.

Future schedules for workouts and other preparations will be made only when it's determined there's minimal chance for a virus outbreak among the student-athletes.

Rather than return to standard on-campus living, students will remain housed at the hotel all summer. The school is planning entertainment for the players but also expects that they will leave the hotel while training for the upcoming campaign.
