With the news that former Ohio State offensive coordinator, Bill O'Brien, was set to take over as the head coach at Boston College, one of the most prestigious coordinator positions in all of college football immediately became available.

It didn't take long for the Buckeyes' to find O'Brien's replacement, though. On Friday, Chip Kelly was named the new offensive coordinator for OSU.

On the surface, it may seem like a step down for Kelly, who has served as the head coach for the UCLA Bruins since 2018. However, the reality is that Ohio State is one of the most prestigious football programs in America. This hiring could potentially pave the path for Kelly to be considered as a head coaching option for the Buckeyes if they were to eventually decide to move on from Ryan Day.

Kelly went 35-34 during his six seasons at the helm for the Bruins. Although those results aren't much to write home about, Kelly's reputation has always revolved around his play-calling. He first gained coaching notoriety leading a high-octane offense at Oregon, which began in 2007, before he eventually moved on to the NFL, taking over as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013.

Prior to this announcement, there had been speculation that Kelly was looking to move on from UCLA due to a lack of support when it came to being competitive on the NIL recruiting front.

Now, Chip Kelly will be leading the offense for a football program that is a perennial powerhouse in all aspects. Ohio State is one of the biggest draws for recruits coming out of high school, or transfer candidates looking to cash in big on NIL opportunities.
