Last month, the Oklahoma football program welcomed seasoned quarterback Casey Thompson for the 2024 season. On Wednesday, Thompson shared his expectations with the Sooners, expressing excitement about sharing the quarterback room with former five-star recruit Jackson Arnold. He also expressed his gratitude for joining the soon-to-be SEC school for the 2024 season, creating anticipation for his performance in the upcoming season.

Transfer QB Casey Thompson: Praises Oklahoma Football

“Everything I’ve ever wanted from a team and a head coach I’ve gotten at Oklahoma,” said transfer quarterback Casey Thompson during his time with the media on Wednesday. Thompson entered the transfer portal last December but landed with the Oklahoma football program one month later. Thompson will play for head coach Brent Venables, who, after posting a 6-7 record during his inaugural season in 2022, led OU to a 10-3 record in 2023. He has won three titles during his coaching career, including being a part of the Oklahoma team that won it all in 2000.

Thompson also spoke about the camaraderie in the loaded but young quarterback room. “When I come into this room, I want to be a great teammate. I want to be able to help these guys. I want them to be able to help me. I want to be good friends to Jackson (Arnold), to General (Booty), to Mike (Hawkins), and to Zurb (Brendan Zurbrugg). There is a special bond about a quarterback room, just being able to push each other and help each other and not be envious of each other when you go out there to play.” His respect for his fellow quarterbacks is evident, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support in the Oklahoma football program.

Thompson continued, “I don’t know what my role is going to be for the fall. When I’m healthy, and I am able to be on the field, I can play the game at a high level.” Thompson will compete with Arnold for the starting quarterback position this fall, but expectations are for the latter to lead the team in 2024.

Casey Thompson: Brings Experience to OU

Thompson will enter his sixth year of college football for the 2024 season. He started his career with the Texas Longhorns in 2019, playing behind star quarterback Sam Ehlinger. The now-Oklahoma football quarterback became the full-time starter in 2021, accumulating 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine picks. He also ran for 155 yards and four scores.

However, Texas posted a 5-7 record, and after landing elite transfer Quinn Ewers from Ohio State, Thompson left for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He threw for 17 touchdowns against ten picks in 2022 but again transferred following the end of the year. The six-foot-one gunslinger landed with the Florida Atlantic Owls for the 2023 campaign, but injuries derailed his season. He finished last year with five touchdowns against five picks in three games. He has completed 64% of his passes in 33 career games.
