Oklahoma State hires Auburn's Derek Mason as new DC

After just one season as Auburn's defensive coordinator, Derek Mason is moving on.

The 52-year-old will replace Oklahoma State's Jim Knowles, who will be Ohio State's next defensive coordinator. Mason became a household name among college football assistant coaches when he served as the defensive coordinator for Stanford from 2010 to 2013.

Mason was then named the head coach at Vanderbilt in early 2014 and held the position through the 2020 campaign. During his time with the Commodores, the program went just 27-55.

Under Mason, Vanderbilt's two most successful seasons were a pair of 6-7 campaigns in 2016 and 2018. In both of those years, the Commodores lost in bowl games -- the Independence Bowl and the Texas Bowl, respectively.
