Oklahoma, Texas to stay in Big 12 until 2025

Texas and Oklahoma will remain in the Big 12 through the end of June 2025, which might be good news for their football fans. UT and OU have said they will join the SEC, the Big Dog of college football, on July 1, 2025.

“They’re going to be here through ‘25,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark told reporters at the Big 12 Basketball Tipoff. “They’ve committed themselves in advance of me getting here and they’ve reiterated that commitment. So they’ll be here through the duration (of the grant of rights). And my relationship with both Texas and Oklahoma is very, very strong. And they are full members and we’re looking forward to working with them.”

On the football side, the SEC is only getting better. Alabama are Georgia are annual powerhouses. Tennessee, coming off a win over Alabama, and Mississippi are undefeated this season. Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, Florida, Kentucky and Texas A&M have above-average programs.

Meanwhile, Texas and Oklahoma have been far from great in Big 12 play. Texas has lost to unranked Texas Tech, and Oklahoma was recently blown out by Texas and TCU.

On the positive side, Texas nearly beat the Crimson Tide, so that's a start.

“My conversations with Oklahoma and Texas have always been about being great members until they leave, which is in ‘25,” Yormark said. “And the experience has been very positive so far.”

As for the Big 12, the schedule will look much different soon. BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston will join the league in 2023. Each conference school will play a nine-game league schedule, with each team playing each other at least once over a two-year period.
