Oregon offers Mario Cristobal extension amid Miami links?

A report surfaced earlier on Friday that the Miami Hurricanes could potentially part ways with head coach Manny Diaz and make a run at Mario Cristobal of the Oregon Ducks. 

Miami might already be too late. 

John Canzano of The Oregonian reports that Oregon has offered Cristobal a contract extension to remain with the program that is "aggressive and in line with what we’ve seen this week" throughout college football. 

ESPN's Chris Low has since confirmed the story. 

Cristobal will guide Oregon into Friday's Pac-12 Championship Game against the Utah Utes, but Canzano adds that Cristobal is originally from Miami and played and coached at the school. The Hurricanes reportedly intend to speak with Cristobal and his agent at some point following Friday's matchup. 

Cristobal is in his fourth full season in charge at Oregon and holds a 35–12 record during his tenure with the university. According to Low, he received a six-year deal worth $27.3 million from the school in December 2020 that runs through the 2025 season and includes incentives allowing him to earn more than $5.5 million for the 2021 campaign if the Ducks win the Pac-12 Championship. 

However, Cristobal's mother is back in Miami and battling an illness, so that could ultimately affect his future past Friday evening. Per Low, Cristobal's current contract includes a $9 million buyout if he leaves for a different college gig before Jan. 14.
