The third Penn State player of this cycle has entered the transfer portal.

Receivers KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Malick Meiga did so earlier this month, and now, a defensive linemen has done the same.

Davon Townley Jr. is entering the transfer portal after three seasons with Penn State, per Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247Sports.

This is Townely’s second time entering the portal. He also entered after the 2022 regular season but decided to remain at Penn State.

Before Penn State, Townley was a two-time all-conference performer at Minneapolis’ North Community High School. Townley didn’t play high school football until his junior year, but by the time he graduated, he was a four-star recruit and the No. 3 recruit in Minnesota from his class according to 247Sports and the No. 2 player according to Rivals. Townley was also a star basketball player for North Community, averaging 17.5 points and 9.4 rebounds his junior season. Townley committed and signed with Penn State on National Signing Day in February 2021.

Townley redshirted his freshman season and didn’t appear in any games.

In 2022, Townley played in seven of Penn State’s 13 games, making his first tackle Oct. 23 in the team’a White Out win over Townley’s state school,  Minnesota. He ended the season with three tackles. In a crowded defensive tackle room headlined by Zane Durant, Hakeem Baemon and D’von Ellies, Townley didn’t get much playing time in Year 3, getting only 17 defensive snaps.

Wherever Townley ends up playing, he’ll have two seasons of eligibility. Penn State’s defensive line was a strong suit next season and is slated to again be one in 2024, with players such as Durant, Ellies and Dani Dennis-Sutton returning.
