Texas football announces 13 positive COVID-19 tests

The Texas Longhorns have reported the latest COVID-19 outbreak among its program amid the coronavirus pandemic that threatens the 2020 college football season.

On Thursday, Bryan Fischer of College Football Talk confirmed a university statement that announced 13 Texas players tested positive "or are presumed positive" for the coronavirus. Those 13 individuals and 10 others were asked to quarantine and self-isolate.

Four others tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies:

It's not definitively known if possessing antibodies prevents somebody from catching the coronavirus a second time.

A handful of players from the Alabama Crimson Tide have tested positive for COVID-19 since student-athletes were welcomed back to campus facilities for voluntary workouts earlier this month. Auburn, Oklahoma State, and Florida State are some of the other schools that reported positive tests.

The University of Houston suspended workouts after six symptomatic athletes tested positive.

Also on Thursday, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said players must be "insulated from the community" and "tested nearly every day" for there to be football seasons this fall.
