Texas Tech rewards HC Joey McGuire with new six-year deal

You never know what a new head coach will bring to the table, especially when that coach has no prior experience as the head man in the college football ranks.

Joey McGuire did have one heck of a resume, though. It was one that included three Texas state championships and a 141-42 record at Cedar Hill High School as well as a successful stop as an associate head coach at Baylor.

Texas Tech rolled the dice on McGuire and he delivered with a 7-5 season and a berth in the Texas Bowl. As such, the Red Raiders have offered their new head coach a massive contract extension that's going to keep him in Lubbock for quite some time.

McGuire and Texas Tech have agreed on a six-year contract extension worth $26.6 million, according to a press release from the program.

"I firmly believe our best days are still ahead with Coach McGuire at the helm of our football program," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said in the statement. "It was evident throughout this football season that he and his staff are building a culture that will benefit this program for years to come. Coach McGuire will be the first to tell you that his goal is not to just play in a bowl game but to win championships, and I believe we are on that path under his direction."

A 7-5 record may not immediately jump off the page, but Texas Tech notched wins over No. 25 Houston, No. 22 Texas and Oklahoma and also finished the campaign on a three-game winning streak.

As the Big 12 looks to adapt with Texas and Oklahoma eventually leaving for the SEC, being at or near the top of the conference will be an important step for Texas Tech once the shakeup happens.
