Todd McShay: Christian Hackenberg 'not ready' for NFL

At one time, Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg was the top quarterback prospect for the 2016 NFL Draft. Now, one NFL scout says Hackenberg is nowhere near ready to play in the NFL.

Speaking on a conference call, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay had some harsh words when it came to Hackenberg's NFL potential. In particular, McShay had problems with Hackenberg's accuracy as a passer.

"Accuracy to me is the No. 1 trait when evaluating a quarterback," McShay said. "You can split hairs between mental makeup and accuracy but if you can’t deliver the ball accurately to spots, leading receivers to yards after catch, anticipating where receivers are going to be, you’re going to struggle in this league."

McShay also said that it would be "really hard to put a first- or even a second-round grade" on the Penn State starter. In the end, McShay said that he felt Hackenberg was "just not ready" for the NFL.

Hackenberg, who still has one year of eligibility left, will decide after the Nittany Lions’ Jan. 2 TaxSlayer Bowl game against Georgia whether to declare for the NFL draft or return for his senior season.
