Two Indiana State football players killed in single-vehicle crash

The Indiana State Sycamores football program has suffered a horrific tragedy ahead of their season-opening game versus the North Alabama Lions scheduled for Sept. 1.

According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Indiana State freshmen Caleb VanHooser and Christian Eubanks were killed in a single-vehicle crash that occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Indiana State confirmed in a statement that Jayden Musili, a 19-year-old, also lost his life.

Redshirt freshman running back Omarion Dixon and redshirt freshman linebacker John Moore were also injured.

Eubanks, 18, was set to play linebacker for the Sycamores. VanHooser, 19, was a defensive back.

As noted by TMZ Sports and the AP, the vehicle involved in the incident was traveling on a state highway approximately 10 miles from the university's campus when it struck a tree. Deputies found the car on fire when they arrived at the scene.

"There are no words to express the depth of our sadness about this tragedy," Indiana State president Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said for the release. "We send our condolences to the family and friends of the students involved. The Sycamore family is mourning and will support each other in this time of grief."

Sycamores football head coach Curt Mallory added:

"It is a terrible day for Indiana State football and a devastating loss for both the Eubanks and the VanHooser families. Both young men were quality individuals who were loved and respected by their teammates and this staff. To say they will be missed is an understatement. Our continued prayers and support are with their families, friends, and teammates during this difficult time."

Understandably, Mallory canceled Monday's practice session. Hundreds of students and other individuals gathered at the school's football stadium to mourn and honor the victims on Sunday evening.
