UConn reports zero positive coronavirus tests among student-athletes

College sports fans yearning for some good news after an emotionally exhausting few days received just that ahead of the weekend.

As Alexa Philippou of the Hartford Courant wrote on Friday, the University of Connecticut reported zero positive coronavirus results out of 150 tests conducted on student-athletes since June 19.

Via an official statement, athletic director David Benedict said:

"While this is good news, it is certainly no time to relax the standards and protocols we have in place to ensure the safety of our student-athletes and staff. We will remain vigilant throughout this process. I’d like to commend our public health officials and medical staff for planning and implementing these protocols while also passing along my gratitude to our student-athletes and staff for adhering to the guidelines. It is my expectation that a future positive test is inevitable but I am confident that the procedures we have in place will mitigate any community spread.”

On Tuesday, Notre Dame claimed zero positive results among 103 football players in the school's latest round of testing.

The Connecticut update is a welcome change of fortune in a week that saw the Ivy League cancel fall sports through at least the end of the year, the Big Ten shift to conference-only schedules and multiple powerful individuals question if college football and other sports are realistic for fall terms amid the worsening pandemic.
