Vanderbilt football resumes football practice after coronavirus cases

The Vanderbilt Commodores football program resumed practice sessions on Wednesday morning for the first time since the discovery of coronavirus cases caused the temporary postponement of practices on Friday.

As ESPN's Chris Low wrote, a "small number" of confirmed virus cases led to the school canceling scheduled football activities. Any student-athletes who test positive for the virus must self-isolate until otherwise directed.

Vanderbilt football was in the headlines for a positive reason on Tuesday when star linebacker Dimitri Moore announced via Instagram that he would play this fall after initially opting out.

"After my grandfather's passing from COVID-19, I made a decision to opt-out of the upcoming football season," he explained.

"Since then, I have done more research and had many conversations with doctors and medical personnel. I look forward to returning to the program and playing this season, and I have made this decision on my own. As a team, we are responsible for our actions and hold each other accountable within our environment. I have trust and confidence in Vanderbilt's testing abilities and safety protocols."

Moore compiled 99 total tackles (48 solo), six tackles for a loss and three passes defended as a redshirt sophomore during the 2019 campaign.

Vanderbilt is scheduled to open at the Texas A&M Aggies on Sept. 26.
