Vince Young throws support behind Steve Sarkisian and Texas' move to SEC

Vince Young is a Texas football legend. What he says about the Longhorns carries a ton of weight, so the fact that he's backing up head coach Steve Sarkisian heading into his second season in Austin is good news.

Good news for Sarkisian, at least, who is coming off a 5-7 season in his inaugural campaign as Texas head coach.

That record is far from the expectation at Texas, but Young feels Sarkisian has the Longhorns on the right track.

The former Texas quarterback recently joined ESPN's "First Take" and dished on his alma mater.

“Honestly, right now Coach Sark is doing everything he needs to do,” Young said, as transcribed by 247Sports. “I have the opportunity to be around him a lot, and hearing his speeches and how he is building the team, I really do feel like he is moving in the right direction. He’s just got to continue to keep working at it."

This is Sarkisian's first head coaching job since being unceremoniously fired at USC in 2015 as he struggled through a rather public drinking problem. Sark rehabbed his image as an assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama and earned the Texas job after his predecessor, Tom Herman, was fired despite going 32-18 and 4-0 in Bowl Games in four seasons.

Again, the expectations at Texas are high, and they're about to get even higher when the Longhorns join the SEC.

“Change is change,” Young said of the eventual move to the SEC. “Everything is always good to move forward. Especially being the University of Texas, I think being in the SEC is big for us because of the fact that the SEC is a really outstanding conference. To be able to go to Florida and play, and even bring back the Texas A&M game, which we really want here in Texas. Just to compete on that type of level is going to be really good for the University of Texas, especially revenue wise.”
