Outlook
It’s the Jayden de Laura Bowl in Tempe, Arizona. The Cougs travel to Arizona and will face their former quarterback.
But there is more to it. Washington State has already sewn up a bowl bid. Their big game is next week’s Apple Cup against Washington.
On the other hand, the Wildcats breathed new life into their season by upsetting UCLA last week. They have four wins. To reach the postseason, the Cats must beat Wazzu on Saturday and Arizona State next week.
After de Laura left Pullman, Wazzu found a new gunslinger, Cameron Ward. He hasn’t lit up the stat sheet over the last two games. But what Ward has done is what it takes to win, manage the offense, and don’t turn the ball over.
In addition, Nakia Watson is back with a vengeance. He returned two games ago and has 353 yards from scrimmage and 4 touchdowns since. Speaking of returns, receiver Renard Bell should be good to go after missing the last several weeks with an arm injury.
No coach in this league knows de Laura better than Dickert. As the Cougs’ defensive coordinator for two seasons, his unit faced JdL in practice every day.
Speaking of defense, this isn’t the same team de Laura left less than a year ago. Wazzu allows the fewest points per game in the Pac-12 (19.8) and the third-fewest yards (358.5).
Arizona can score points, and it’s up to the Washington State Cougars to do what UCLA couldn’t last week, control the clock.
