Watch: Clemson kicker misses chip-shot field goal, Tigers fall to Florida State in OT

Clemson snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the most brutal way possible in its huge ACC showdown against Associated Press No. 4 Florida State.

Kicker Jonathan Weitz, brought back after leaving the team following the 2022 season having never kicked a field goal, rejoined the Tigers on Monday. He made his first attempt in the first quarter against FSU and was a perfect 3-for-3 on his extra points before his potential winning attempt.

Faced with a 29-yarder, Weitz pushed the ball wide left for a stunning miss. Florida State (4-0) went on to win the game 31-24 in overtime.

During the game, play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough mentioned that Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said the previous day that "this is either going to be a great story, or terrible."

After his miss, color commentator Greg McIlroy lamented what "[w]ould have been a Hollywood ending." However, as McDonough pointed out, "The writers are on strike."

Head coach Swinney and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley didn't do anything to bail Weitz out late in the game. After the Tigers defense forced a turnover on downs, Clemson (2-2) called a conservative run play with no timeouts. Despite the play gaining a first down, which briefly stopped the clock, the offense showed no urgency and failed to get another play off in regulation.

Then, on a third-and-1 in overtime, Riley called a run-pass option instead of a downhill run after the Tigers had gained 146 yards on the ground.

Clemson will look back at this game and see several missed opportunities. It outgained Florida State 429-311 and looked like the better team. Postgame win expectancy shows Clemson had a 77 percent chance of pulling off the upset.

Weitz's stunning miss will be hard to forget, but the coaching staff's own shortcomings shouldn't be ignored.
