I’ve been on record saying that I love the idea of the Nebraska football spring league created and implemented by head coach Matt Rhule.

It divides Nebraska football players into three different teams and allows them to compete against each other in competitions to “win the day.” Players can also be traded to different teams depending on if their team wins. The team that wins gets to protect more players than the teams that lose.

On Thursday, Nebraska football had a red-zone competition. The offense got six points for a touchdown and three for a field goal, while the defense got four for a forced field goal and six for a stop.

Another standout throw from Dylan Raiola

Dylan Raiola, who met with the media along with the other quarterbacks on Thursday, continued his strong spring and made the highlight reel with a touchdown pass to Jaylen Lloyd in the corner of the end zone.

Lloyd hasn’t been talked about enough this spring but last season, he and Marvin Harrison Jr. were the only players in the Big Ten with three touchdown receptions of 50 yards or more. Lloyd is explosive and Raiola mentioned him by name in his press conference on Thursday. Now we can see why.

Raiola has been as good as advertised according to Sean Callahan, who reported that even a 30 MPH wind earlier this week didn’t impact Raiola’s throws at all, which bodes well for the fall/winter in Nebraska. There’s a long way to go before Week 1, but all signs point to Raiola being QB1 for Nebraska football.

The highlight wasn’t all about Raiola though. Malcolm Hartzog flashed with an interception. The defensive back who started at safety and corner last season is poised for a huge junior season in the secondary.
