Watch: Jayhawks unveil new look for David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium
Kansas basketball is one of the best programs in the country, with four national championships to its name — including one in 2022. Kansas football on the other hand? Well, let's just say the Jayhawks on the gridiron are quite a bit behind their counterparts on the court.
The higher-ups at Kansas don't seem to be aiming for mediocrity anymore, though. KU revealed its new vision for David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, where the Jayhawks play football, and it looks like it's going to be a state-of-the-art investment.
The renovations won't be just limited to the stadium, though. Kansas is planning on building what it is calling the Gateway District with the football stadium as its crown jewel.
This district will feature a new conference center, multi-use facilities, and plans for retail, dining, and other amenities that 'will drive student recruitment and enhance the campus experience for KU students and employees."
“This project represents a new day for the University of Kansas,” athletic director Travis Goff said in a statement. “An ambitious vision and heightened aspirations require bold investment and earnest action. The Gateway District and new David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will deliver a profound experience and provide an impact that our student-athletes, fans, and broader community richly deserve.”
Upgrades to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will include new seating, a larger video board, more legroom per seat, and four times the amount of food and beverage options in the concourses.
Construction will begin after the 2023 football season and is expected to continue until the beginning of the 2025 campaign. With a fundraising goal of $300M for the project, KU announced that it has already secured $165M in donations towards the project.
