Watch: Texas haunted by fourth-down failures in Red River Rivalry loss
Texas came painfully close to tying its annual rivalry with Oklahoma on a fourth-and-goal early in the fourth quarter. That failure will haunt Texas for the rest of the regular season after Oklahoma escaped the Red River Rivalry with a 34-30 win.
The Longhorns had four attempts at the 1-yard line but couldn't punch the ball into the end zone. Running back Jonathon Brooks lost one yard on three carries before quarterback Quinn Ewers threw a quick pass at the line of scrimmage to wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who was stopped inches short of the goal line, which kept Oklahoma's lead at 27-20.
Texas (5-1) appeared to avoid the sequence haunting it after holding the Sooners to a missed field goal and punt on their next two possessions while it scored 10 points in a row to take the lead with 1:17 left.
However, Oklahoma (6-0) quarterback Dillon Gabriel shined down the stretch, including on the winning touchdown 62 seconds later.
The epic rivalry got the ending it deserved, but Oklahoma's goal-line stand at the start of the fourth quarter won the game.
