DeMeco Ryans calls Bryce Young “outstanding” as a quarterback

The Houston Texans have the No. 2 overall pick for the upcoming NFL Draft.

DeMeco Ryans, a former linebacker for the Texans, is now the franchise’s head coach. He answered questions Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine as the leader of an organization. Ryans, a former University of Alabama standout, is intrigued by Bryce Young. Young played three seasons for the Crimson Tide, including two as a starter. He compiled 8,200 passing yards and 79 touchdown passes in 2021 and 2022 combined, earning the Heisman Memorial Trophy in 2021.

Houston has a quarterback, Davis Mills, but will Ryans restart the program by taking Young in April?

He had a lot of positive things to say about the former five-star.

“I know Bryce is an outstanding leader,” Ryans said per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, Texas. “From what I have seen, he is an outstanding quarterback. It is no surprise the success he has had because of the makeup, the type of guy he is, there is no surprise about the success he’s had.”

Young finished his career at Alabama ranked No. 2 for passing yards (8,356), passing touchdowns (80), and total touchdowns (87). He was a two-time team captain and played through a shoulder injury last year. Houston has former Tide wide receiver, John Metchie III and linebacker Christian Harris, but does Ryans enhance the offense by selecting Young?

Ryans will have to attend Young’s pro day to watch him throw. He is not throwing at the combine.
