Former Central Michigan quarterback Tommy Lazzaro was tragically killed in a hunting accident in Florida last weekend, according to multiple reports.

Lazzaro, 27, died in what the Walton County Sheriff’s Office called "a tragic hunting accident" at Eglin Air Force Base. According to TaskandPurpose.com, Lazzaro, who joined the Army after graduating from CMU and was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), was hit by a bullet from a hunter who was shooting at the Eglin range.

“We deeply mourn the loss of U.S. Army Sgt. Thomas Lazzaro of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne),” Col. Patrick Nelson, 7th SFG(A) commander, said in a statement. “We will never forget his dedication, courage, and commitment to safeguarding our freedoms. His absence leaves a void that will be felt professionally and personally among those who had the honor of working with Thomas. Our heartfelt condolences extend to his family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time."

Central Michigan confirmed Lazzaro's passing on Thursday.

"When we took over the program, Tommy was truly our leader in so many ways," former Central Michigan head coach Jim McElwain said. "CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us. He will be missed by all of the Chippewas."

In his career with the Chippewas from 2016-19, Lazzaro appeared in 20 games with five starts. The Colorado native completed 72 of 149 passes for 758 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions while adding 542 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 133 carries.

In his final season, Lazzaro helped Central Michigan improve from 1-11 in 2018 to 8-6 with trips to the MAC Championship Game and New Mexico Bowl.

A celebration of Lazzaro's life will take place this Saturday afternoon at Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lazzaro's friends, family and former teammates during this difficult time.
