Garrett Nussmeier's 2025 NFL Draft decision became much easier after Alabama loss

The LSU Tigers thought they had the more balanced team heading into Saturday's showdown with Alabama. Instead, the Alabama Crimson Tide dismantled LSU as the rain poured down. The Tigers were outmanned and overwhelmed in every phase of the game.

Even though it was far from one player's fault, the most obvious struggles came from LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. Ranked as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft at various parts of the season, it's now hard to imagine the fourth-year junior declares. There's no argument whether he's ready or not, even if he does decide to make the jump.

What's Nussmeier's 2025 NFL Draft outlook after losing to Alabama?

Much of the 2024 season has been impressive for the first-year starter who sat behind Jayden Daniels. Nussmeier doesn't have the strongest arm and his inexperience has bled through in some key moments. However, he's incredibly gutsy and confident, and his playmaking has given LSU life when they otherwise seemed out of it.

Completing only 27 of his 42 attempts for 239 yards for one touchdown and two interceptions, Nussmeier utterly failed to match Jalen Milroe's playmaking. The Tigers' offense produced a handful of decent gains but the passing attack averaged only 5.7 yards per attempt. The big plays were taken away, and Nussmeier fell into the trap of checking down into crowded spaces.

Instead of parsing through dense coverages, Nussmeier's youth led to inconsistent processing. His time to throw swelled above his season average, and he opted against testing tight passing windows. It was his fifth-straight game with a quarterback rating under 100.

LSU doesn't have the same star power as they've had in recent years, but Caden Durham and Kyren Lacy are a better combination than what most units offer their quarterback. Playmaking isn't the issue in LSU. Coaching might be another discussion, but an inexperienced quarterback without high-level traits will struggle in certain situations.

This was one of those times when those limitations showed. For NFL teams looking for a franchise star, it's clear that Nussmeier must become an elite processor to be a reliably great passer. It's reminiscent of Joe Burrow, who also lacked the physical traits of guys like Milroe.

All of this makes it easier to say Nussmeier isn't ready. Coming back in 2025 will help him improve mentally and physically. Now, that decision looks much more clear cut.
