The Michigan football team has a quarterback competition on their hands this offseason, and one player fighting the starting job is Jack Tuttle. Tuttle has the most playing experience as he has been in college since 2019. He played for Indiana before joining the Wolverines last season. Now, he is trying to win the starting job at Michigan, but he is currently battling an injury and he didn’t play in the spring game last month.
Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore spoke at a camp this week, and he also met with reporters. He was asked about Jack Tuttle and his injury, and it sounds like things are going well.
“He’s throwing, he’s full speed, and he’s rolling,” Sherrone Moore said, according to an article from 247 Sports. “He looked good. Saw him a couple days, just peeking out of my office, saw him throwing a little bit. He’s up to speed and he’s ready to go.”
Alex Orji is expected to win the Michigan QB battle, but Tuttle is certainly in the mix for the starting job.
“He’ll be in it,” Moore said. “We talked about this as a team, as a staff. The dudes that he backed up are Michael Penix and JJ McCarthy. So he’s got talent and we’ll see what happens when he gets a fall camp.”
We got our first look at the QB battle during the spring game, and while Jack Tuttle wasn’t available, every other QB got some reps in. Michigan football QB coach Kirk Campbell had a lot to say about his guys after that game.
“Alex [Orji] has been much better of a passer,” Kirk Campbell said. “He had a couple today he would probably like back. But you can see, he can throw the football. Davis [Warren], his knowledge of the system is through the dang roof. He’s like me out there. Jayden Denegal, he had a really bad start this spring, and he was exceptional in the last 11 practices. I know today meant a lot to him. And then Jadyn Davis is like a sponge out there. You tell him one thing, he goes and does. So everybody got better, which is what you want to see out of spring ball. Nobody got worse. And that’s a credit them and their belief in themselves and how they attack practice.”
This QB battle should last long into the offseason for Michigan. It’ll be interesting to see who trots out onto the field on August 31st when the Wolverines open up the season against Fresno State.
