In the immediate aftermath of a gritty 45-38 overtime win by the Texas Longhorns against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the swirling speculation regarding his interest in NFL head-coaching openings. The report, published by The Athletic, claimed that his representatives had let NFL decision-makers know he would be willing to consider a move. Sarkisian, however, vehemently denied any such outreach and made clear that the story caught him — and his staff — off guard.
“I’d love to touch on this … because it really pisses me off that one person can make a report that in turn the entire media sports world runs with as factual,” Sarkisian said during his post-game media availability. “I thought it was absolutely ridiculous. I thought it was completely unprofessional of that person to put that report out. . . Where that report came from, I’d love to talk to that person because it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

His frustration was directed not only at the reporter responsible for the original claim, but also at the speed with which it permeated the entire sports media ecosystem. “To the point my agency and my agents have to put a statement out, which they’ve never done historically,” Sarkisian added. Indeed, his agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), issued a rare public declaration citing the report as “patently false and wildly inaccurate. Sark is solely focused on coaching the University of Texas football team.”
That statement and public rebuke underscore the stakes at hand. Sarkisian is under contract with Texas through 2031 and is among the highest-paid coaches in college football; the school made clear this offseason it views him as long-term. For his part, Sarkisian insisted the speculation had to be addressed—not only for his own reputation but for the stability of his locker room and program. “I had to do that to protect my locker room and my team,” he said, calling the media cycle around the story “borderline embarrassing.”
Coming in the middle of a turbulent season, the timing of the report is an unnecessary distraction for a team that needs to remain focused. Sarkisian rebuked the report, affirming his commitment to the Longhorns.
As the Longhorns look ahead to the remainder of the 2025 campaign, this episode serves as a reminder that even the most successful programs must manage not just the scoreboard but the headlines.
