Well, that didn’t take too long. It only took a few days for LSU’s coaching search to go from normal to full blow chaos. Part of this chaos revolves around the possible return of Ed Orgeron to Baton Rouge.

This, on top of Louisiana’s governor Jeff Landry vowing to block LSU athletic director Scott Woodward from selecting the next head coach, has made this an exciting few days. But let’s focus on the Orgeron part of the chaos.

There is no denying that Orgeron is an LSU legend, mostly due to his guidance of the historically dominant National Championship 2019 team. But that unraveled as quickly as it was created. After going 5-5 in 2020 and then starting the 2021 season at 4-3, Orgeron and LSU decided to part ways at the end of the season.

Why did things fall apart after the 2019 season? Mostly because Orgeron lost several important parts of his coaching staff and was never able to replace them successfully. The biggest losses being Dave Aranda to Baylor and Joe Brady to the NFL.

Four year later, Orgeron hasn’t been subtle regarding his desire to return to the sidelines. The sudden opening at LSU introduced an entirely new possibility for him, which the press was eager to ask him about:

No matter how unrealistic it may be, even the thought of returning to Baton Rouge excites Orgeron. If it’s as a head coach or as an assistant, he would accept the job before the contract could be drafted. All of this makes sense for Orgeron, but not for LSU.

After the conclusion of the 2021 season, two years after leading LSU to a National Championship, Orgeron hasn’t coached anywhere. This is the fourth consecutive season that he has sat at home and waited for a phone call that has yet to come.

Yet, in one breath some fans are eager to point out why LSU is a better job than Florida, but then in the next breath they want Orgeron back. Orgeron shouldn’t ever be LSU’s choice, but the fact his name is being mentioned during the first week makes it look desperate.

Personally, I’d love for him to return to Baton Rouge, but that is for entertainment purposes only. LSU fans need to slow down for a second and refocus. This is a good job that will get a good coach, and his name won’t be Orgeron.
