The University of Stanford announced earlier this week that star soccer player Katie Meyer has died, and her death has since been ruled a suicide.
The Santa Clara County medical examiner issued a statement on Thursday revealing that Meyer died from suicide. There was no foul play suspected.
“There is no indication of foul play, and Meyer’s death was determined to be self-inflicted,” the statement read. “The County of Santa Clara is not releasing additional information about the case at this time.”
Meyer, who was 22, was found dead in an on-campus residence at Stanford on Tuesday. The news came as a shock to the Stanford community.
Meyer, a goalkeeper and team captain, helped lead Stanford to a national championship in 2019. She made two huge saves in a penalty shootout against North Carolina and went viral for her celebration afterward.
