Penn State Wrestling recently got something it rarely gets … some bad news.

The No. 14 recruit of the 2024 recruiting class (according to FloWrestling), Mason Gibson, indicated he would be opening back up his recruiting options.

The Bishop McCort High School standout is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 2024 PIAA Wrestling Championships. Gibson’s first school of choice was Cornell, however back in 2022 he changed his mind and pledged his commitment to Cael Sanderson and the Nittany Lions.

Where Penn State Wrestling Goes from Here after Losing Mason Gibson

While this may sting a bit to Penn State fans, there are still plenty of options the Nittany Lions have at 125 pounds.

True freshman Braeden Davis turned a lot of heads with his performance this past season and the overall No. 1 recruit in the 2024 class, Luke Lilledahl, is headed to Happy Valley.

Between Aaron Nagao, Davis, and Lilledahl, the Nittany Lions will be stacked at both of the lightweight positions.

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to where Mason will end up.

Because, regardless of which school he picks, unless it’s Cornell or he somehow decides to come back to Penn State, it will be his third college of choice.

And this is even before he’s wrestled a single collegiate match.

But even with Gibson’s departure, the Nittany Lions are set to bring the No. 1 (Lilledahl), No. 5 (Zack Ryder), No. 6 (Joseph Sealey), No. 11 (Connor Mirasola), and No. 24 (Cole Mirasola) to campus in the 2024 recruiting class.
